NOTE:This guide is for the AirLink LX40 North America modem, model # 1104579, which is approved for use with Verizon and AT&T in North America.

The AirLink®LX40 requires WIN-911 version 4.20.5 or newer. If you're not sure which version of WIN-911 you have, open WIN-911 Workspace and navigate to System -> System Info, you will see the Release Version. You can also check Add/Remove Programs for the version number of the WIN-911 Navigation module.

This guide will walk through the installation and setup of the Sierra Wireless LX40 for use with the WIN-911 SMS Notifier module to send and receive text messages.

The LX40 configuration interface, called ACEmanager, is accessible via a USB or Ethernet connection. For this document, our focus will be on Ethernet connectivity, which allows for a connection directly to a PC or a network switch within your LAN.

Before configuring your modem, you will need to set up a wireless account with AT&T or Verizon and obtain a Standard sized SIM card.

NOTE: You can use a Micro or Nano SIM card but you'll need the appropriate Standard SIM card adapter.

NOTE: The LX40 is only capable of sending text messages containing ASCII characters.

WIN-911 can potentially send many text messages so we recommend subscribing to an unlimited texting plan to avoid overage charges. Neither a data nor voice plan is required for use with WIN-911.
It is possible to install the modem ahead of time without a SIM card, but WIN-911 will not function correctly until the SIM card is installed in the modem.

A. Installing the SIM Card

To install the SIM card

  • Remove the SIM card cover. Press the tab with a screwdriver while sliding the cover upwards.
  • Orient your SIM card as shown. (with the gold contacts of the SIM card face down)
  • Gently slide the SIM card into the slot until it clicks into place.
  • To remove the SIM card, press the SIM card in, and release it. Gently grip the SIM card and pull it out.
  • Replace the SIM card cover.

If you purchased your modem from WIN-911 Software, antennas and a power adapter have been supplied with it.

  • Connect antennas to the Cellular and Diversity connectors.
  • Connect the power supply adapter to the Power connector.

When the modem is powered on, a green LED chase may occur. This indicates that the radio module is being configured for your SIM card. This process can take 6 - 7 minutes.

Once the modem's radio module is configured for the SIM card, it begins the activation/provisioning process and attempts to connect to the mobile network. This process typically takes 5 - 10 minutes. A successful connection is indicated by a solid green Network LED. If the router does not automatically connect to the network, refer to the WAN/Cellular chapter of the AirLink LX40 Software Configuration Guide. The guide is attached to this article.

There are two options for connecting the modem to your WIN-911 system. First, you may connect the modem to a network switch and access it from anywhere within your network. Second, you may connect the modem directly to your WIN-911 system with an Ethernet cable so it is only accessible from the WIN-911 system. We will cover the details of both options.

A. Connecting the Modem to a Network Switch / LAN

The LX40 is configured to be used as a router which means if you connect it to a LAN, out-of-the-box, it may begin assigning IP addresses to other devices on your network. We want to avoid this from happening, so we will be disabling the modem's router capabilities before connecting it to your LAN.

We have found the easiest way to initially access and configure your modem is by connecting an Ethernet cable from the modem directly to a PC. You do not need to connect the modem to the PC running WIN-911 for this step, this is only needed for the initial configuration. Once the configuration is complete, you can connect the modem to your LAN.

  • With the LX40 powered up, connect an Ethernet cable from the modem to your PC. Your PC should automatically connect the modem and receive an IP address. You can now access Acemanager, which is the configuration interface for the modem,by opening http://192.168.13.31:9191 in a browser.

  • You will be prompted to log in. The administrator user name is entered by default. Enter the default password which is printed on the bottom label of the modem.

  • Once logged in, the Home screen will appear. Check the Network State field, if your SIM card is set up correctly, it should read Network Ready. If it doesn't say Network Ready, you will need to resolve the issue with your carrier.
  • Click the LAN tab on the top and select Host Port Routing on the left.
  • Change Proxy ARP (Primary Gateway) to Disable and click Apply on the top right.
  • Click Ethernet on the left.
  • Since we are adding the LX40 as a network device on your LAN, you will need to assign a static valid IP address which is reachable by the WIN-911 system. If you're not sure which address to use, consult with your IT team.
  • Under the General section, make the following changes.
    • Device IP: Set the static IP address you were provided by your IT team.
    • DHCP Mode: Disable

NOTE: Leave Starting IP, Ending IP, and DHCP network mask at their defaults. When you disable DHCP, they're no longer used.

  • Click Apply and then Reboot on the top right. Your modem is now configured to be attached to your LAN. Unplug the Ethernet cable from your PC and attach it to your network switch. Once connected, you should be able to open Acemanager from the WIN-911 system. Once connectivity is confirmed, you are ready to configure the modem for use with WIN-911.

B. Connecting the Modem Directly to a PC via Ethernet

The LX40 operates as a router so connecting your PC directly to the modem is a simple process.

  • With the LX40 powered up, connect an Ethernet cable from the modem to your PC. Your PC should automatically connect the modem and receive an IP address. You can now access Acemanager, which is the configuration interface for the modem, by opening http://192.168.13.31:9191 in a browser.

  • Once you've logged in to Acemanager and confirmed the Network Ready state, continue to step 6.

6. Configuring Modem SMS Settings

WIN-911 and the LX40 communicate with UDP packets over a defined port. When WIN-911 sends a text message, it creates and sends a UDP packet containing the recipient info and message contents. Once the modem receives the packet, it responds to WIN-911 with an ACK message indicating the message was received and sends a text message to the recipient. When the LX40 receives a text message from an operator, it sends the message contents to a predefined IP address in the modem configuration. This IP address must be the WIN-911 system and should be static. If the IP address of WIN-911 were to change, it would stop receiving inbound text messages. The following steps will take you through configuring the modem to communicate with WIN-911.

NOTE: The following steps are the same if you have connected the LX40 to your LAN or directly to the PC running WIN-911.

  • Open Acemanager in a web browser and log in.
    • You should know which IP address to use from the previous steps in this document.
  • Select the Services tab and then SMS on the left and set the following settings.
SettingValueNotes
SMS ModeControl and Gateway
SMS DestinationIP
Local Host IPIP Address of WIN-911 System
Should be a static IP address, if it changes, the modem will stop sending messages to WIN-911
Local Host Port911You can use different UDP port values as long as the chosen ports are not in use by other applications.
ALEOS Port911Must match the Local Host Port setting.

  • Once you have changed the settings, click the Apply button, and then Reboot.
  • Once the modem finishes rebooting, it is ready for use with WIN-911.

7. Configure Windows Firewall

You must configure the firewall on the WIN-911 system to allow inbound UDP traffic over the port selected in the previous section. Follow these steps to create a firewall exception for the WIN-911 SMS Runtime executable using the built-in Windows Firewall. If you're using a 3rd party firewall, refer to their documentation for creating firewall exceptions.

  • Press the+ R keys on your keyboard, to open the Run window. Then, type 'control firewall.cpl' in the Open field and hit Enter or press OK. The Windows Firewall settings should appear.

  • Click Allow an app or feature through Windows Defender Firewall on the left.
  • Click Allow another app... at the bottom of the window. You may need to click the Change settings button at the top of the window first.
  • Click the Browse button and navigate to C:Program Files (x86)WIN-911 SoftwareWIN-911 EnterpriseSMS and select WIN911.Notifier.SMS.Runtime.exe and click Open
  • Click the Add button
  • Make sure the exception is enabled for the network profile you are using to communicate with the LX40. In the example, we are using the Private network profile.
  • Click OK and close the Windows Firewall Settings.
  • Your firewall is now configured for the WIN-911 SMS Runtime.

8. Configure WIN-911 SMS Gateway

With your modem configured, you can set up WIN-911 to use the modem with the following steps.

  • Open the WIN-911 Workspace and navigate to Contacts > Gateways > SMS
  • Click the button on the bottom left to add a new modem.
  • Name: Enter a unique name for the modem.
    • You may find it useful to place the phone number of the modem in the name. E.g. Verizon Modem (555-555-555)
  • Connection Type: Select UDP

  • Address: Enter the IP address and port number of your modem. This is the IP address and port you configured in a previous step. Leave 911 in the port field unless you configured a different port in a previous step.

  • Enable Incoming: When enabled, WIN-911 will process incoming SMS messages for the purpose of remote acknowledgment and Alarm / Report requests. If you do not require such functionality, feel free to disable this option.
  • Click to send a test message to a mobile phone.
  • Once you've tested your settings, select the button to save your configuration.
  • WIN-911 is now configured to properly use your modem.
